If you are looking for proven strategies to engage and motivate your developmental education students then this is the
program for you. It will provide actionable ideas to help improve your developmental education program and will feature
video examples from several exemplary college departments. National developmental education experts will provide their
current insights into helping students to academically succeed.

Presenters Include:

Tamara Clunis, Director, Developmental and Adult Education; THECB

 Tamara Thornton Clunis is the recently appointed Director of Developmental and Adult Education for the
 P-16 Division of the Higher Education Coordinating Board. She is responsible for developing a statewide
 plan for developmental education, with an emphasis on improving student outcomes and increasing alignment
 between adult basic education and post-secondary education. Ms. Clunis has over ten years of experience
 with developmental and adult education in Texas. Prior to joining the Coordinating board, she worked for
 Austin Community College teaching reading and learning strategies. Her most recent position was with the
 United States Military Academy (WestPoint) where she worked as a senior faculty member and
 developmental reading specialist. At WestPoint, she redesigned the learning strategies curriculum to focus
 on contextualized learning to increase student success in the freshman core curriculum.


Marcella Davis, NADE President & Professor; Madisonville Community College

 Marcella Davis teaches in developmental writing and is the director of the Learning Center. At MCC she
 serves as the 2010-2011 president of the National Association for Development Education (NADE).
 Davis served two terms (2003-2004 and 2007-2008) as president of the Kentucky Association for
 Developmental Education and participated in the beginning statewide Assessment & Placement Workgroup,
 as well as the KCTCS Developmental Education Workgroup. She has served as chairperson of the MCC
 Assessment & Placement Committee and the Title III Developmental Education Coordinating Committee.


Cathy Vaughan, Academic Counselor/FSE Coordinator; Madisonville Community College

 Cathy Vaughan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Masters of Arts degree in Psychology/Marriage &
 Family Therapy from Western Kentucky University. Employed in a variety of positions at Madisonville
 Community College since 1990, she assumed the position of Academic Counselor/Student Success
 Coordinator in December 2004. Her responsibilities include the coordination of the First Semester Experience
 orientation program for new students, FSE Advisor recruitment and training, in addition to academic advising
 of students. Cathy has presented on FSE at the national, regional and state level. The venues including NISOD, League for Innovation,
 NACADA, KACADA, KACRAO, Small College Enrollment Conference, Innovative Educators webinars, KCTCS New Horizons Conference.
